Mountain Tourism

Mountain Tourism

Tourism is the fastest growing industry in the world, increasing from 25 million international arrivals in 1950 to 842 million in 2006, a more than 30-fold increase, with international arrivals expected to double to 1.5 billion by 2020. Mountains are important assets for the tourism industry. They take up an estimated share of 15-20% of the global tourism market, generating between 100 and 140 billion US$ per year.
With the highest and most famous mountain peaks of the world, its unique and rare flora and fauna, and a great variety of unique hill and mountain cultures, the tourism potential of the Himalaya region is beyond dispute. At the same time, the region is struggling with high poverty ratios, exacerbated by climate change, environmental degradation, and an increasing rural-urban migration, making traditional livelihood options increasingly unsustainable. Tourism is identified by ICIMOD as a promising adaptation strategy, providing mountain people with alternative livelihood options, building on the strengths of the region.
Tourism is one avenue where mountain specificities that are generally considered constraints to development – remoteness, difficult access, wilderness, insular cultures, and subsistence lifestyles – can be transformed into economic opportunities. Being labour intensive, having relatively high multiplier effects, and requiring relatively low levels of capital and land investment, tourism can yield significant benefits in remote and rural areas where traditional livelihoods are under threat.
In spite of this huge potential, tourism has so far contributed little to poverty reduction in mountain areas. ICIMOD’s research has revealed some major constraints: policy failures have been noted, a lack of human resource development, a lack of supply side facilities and management, and a failure to link tourism with the local production system, resulting in high ‘leakages’ of tourism-generated income from mountain areas.
ICIMOD is addressing these challenges by facilitating and supporting the development of a pro-poor sustainable mountain tourism industry aimed at poverty reduction of mountain people, and increasing their resilience to climate change and other drivers of change. The activities focus on knowledge generation and dissemination, training and capacity building, policy development, and regional coordination between key tourism stakeholders in the Himalaya region.

Top 5 ski chalet swimming pools

Top 5 ski chalet swimming pools

It’s pretty counter intuitive to be packing your thong along with a pair of budgie smugglers for his lordship when you’re off to the Alps, after all you’re going skiing, it’s not a beach holiday but a growing number of luxury ski chalets are including a pool, indoor or outdoor, sometimes both, as this particular luxury becomes a ‘must have’ feature in any new build. A pool adds another, welcome, dimension to a winter break, especially if you’re going as a family, the kids will love splashing about in the pool. Swimming indoors in a luxury setting or the surreal experience of taking a dip outdoors, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, snow and ice is a bit of a novelty and a pretty cool pastime. Here are five fabulous pools for you to drool over.
Chalet Mont Blanc, Megeve
This absolutely ‘knock out’ luxury ski chalet is blessed with two pools, one indoor and one outdoor. The indoor pool is part of the spa and gym area and has fabulous views through the floor to ceiling windows that flood light into the area. My pick is the heated outdoor infinity pool. Overlooking Megeve and surrounded by magnificent scenery, this pool is a winner, in the evenings with the stars above and the twinkling lights of Megeve below you feel like you’re floating in space. Things could get a little rough though, if you’re in the pool when a helicopter lands on the helipad you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the middle of a storm tossed sea.
Chalet Mont Blanc pool
Chalet Norte, Verbier
This truly stunning luxury accommodation only has the one pool, I say only, Mont Blanc may have two but neither of those double as a dance floor, unlike this stunner in Chalet Norte. The pool, when undisturbed has a reflection like highly polished marble and mirrors the opulence and luxury of it’s surroundings. It seems a shame to dive in and break the surface but I bet you will anyway and stay in until the skin on your hands has taken on the appearance of a prune, and then as you’re drying off, the pool can magically morph into a dance floor. No life belts needed for “Staying Alive” as you dance the night away.
Chalet Norte pool
Chalet Jaguar, Megeve
The pool in this beautiful chalet is cocooned in a very cosy and intimate space and while you’re in the pool it feels womb like and very zen, a million miles from the municipal swimming baths back home. It has a luxurious and opulent ambience making the water seemingly feel like velvet. This pool also doubles as a dance floor and a cinema to boot. There could be arguments, in the evening, one half of the family will want to swim the other half will want to watch a film. I suppose the swimmers amongst you could knock on the door of Mont Blanc and ask if you can use theirs, after all they have two.
Chalet Jaguar pool
Chalet L’Raphael, Verbier
The pool in this elegant and luxurious chalet is almost regal, fashioned from onyx, amidst French and Italianate decor, with candelabras set down the sides, it almost feels like you should be dressed in evening attire, or at the very least a tiara for the ladies and a dickie bow for the gents as you take to the waters, perhaps with a glass of champers. This pool is a very civilised affair, you have to mind your manners here, no dive bombing in the deep end or splashing the other bathers, you may well be politely asked to desist from such vulgar behavior by the attendant life guard, fully dressed in dinner suit and white gloves.
Raphael pool
Chalet Dent Blanche, Verbier
The pool is this beautifully furnished, luxurious chalet is part of an impressive spa area set out on one of the five floors that make up this wonderful chalet. The floor that houses the pool is given over entirely to the spa, a home cinema and a very well equipped gym. The pool is very inviting and clad in gorgeous honey toned timber that creates a very warm and welcoming ambience. You may well forget you came here to ski as time spent in this wonderful environment is very addictive.

Such is the size of Australia, trying to join up the countless highlights can be exhausting. We recommend focusing on one area and getting to know it really well – Southern Australia encapsulates the very best of the country.
1. Adelaide – city of cuisine and culture
Fly directly into Adelaide and within 15 minutes of leaving the airport you can be standing beneath Queen Victoria’s statue. The first settlers came here to create a utopia, with lots of greenery being one of their main priorities. Hence the race course, the parks, the botanic garden and cricket grounds.
2. Fleurieu Peninsula – seafood and surfer paradise
Board a vintage tram from Adelaide to Glenelg, just 20 minutes away. With a car, you can then head east to the Fleurieu Peninsula and string of beautiful beaches such as Moana, fantastic for surfing, whilst Willunga is perfect for seafood lovers. Dine at the hugely popular Star of Greece restaurant.

3. Barossa Valley – vineyards & valleys
The Barossa Valley and its 400 vineyards are well-known, but you’ll also find Clare Valley not too far from Adelaide nestled into rolling farmlands and hills of eucalyptus.

4. Flinders Ranges – adventure in the Outback
At the heart of the Ranges is the breath-taking topography of Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheatre of mountains. Just five hours from Adelaide or you can fly by private charter if you like.
5. Kangaroo Island – wilderness & wildlife
Just a short hop form Adelaide, Kangaroo Island is one of the best places to see kola, emu, wallaby, kangaroo, possum, sea lions, seals and much more amazing birdlife, from ospreys to cockatoos. Many of these are extinct on the mainland.
6. Indian Pacific Railway – epic train ride
At the end of your two week holiday in Southern Australia, we recommend you ride the Indian Pacific railway to Sydney (two days and one night) through the Blue Mountains and mining town of Broken Hill.
7. Sydney – a city to suit everyone
This world-class city has handsome attractions from beaches to harbour boat trips, excellent restaurants, sea-plane journeys, evenings at the opera. In fact, if you wanted, you could spend an entire two weeks in Sydney and still have a wonderful holiday.

6 reasons December beckons for the true skier

6 reasons December beckons for the true skier

With a pair of planks strapped to my feet at the age of three, little did I know this would be the shape of things to come – a passion that I would never outgrow. As an avid skier, I have experienced most snow conditions that the Alps have to offer and while of course we can’t reliably forecast a huge snow dump, the trends (and peoples’ perception of those trends) are fairly robust.
1. First tracks
Espace Killy aside, December is when the vast majority of ski resorts open and quite understandably the seasoned skier is simply desperate to indulge his/her sport after months of abstinence! And why not – if you go at the beginning of the season, there is plenty of time to score a second ski trip to enjoy later season conditions.
2. The pistes are quieter
The good news is that it takes most of the winter sports enthusiasts a little time to warm up to their ski trip so on average, the pistes are so much quieter. More importantly there are very few queues for the lifts which means your vertical mileage potential is phenomenal. I challenge you to literally double your vertical descent statistics!
Quiet pistes
3. Amazing piste conditions
While December isn’t known for off piste skiing, I have often enjoyed incredible conditions. Last year I lost my ski in 2m of glorious powder! The pistes themselves are exceptional, having been groomed to perfection for the resort opening. With far fewer skiers and snowboarders cutting up the slopes, the corduroy remains intact for much longer, especially at high altitude resorts, making each of those descents so much more enjoyable. The Skiing World Cup is held in Val d’Isere in December and if it’s good enough for the world’s skiing elite…
4. Luxury for less
Some weeks in the month of December can be up to half the price of peak season tariffs, making that perfect luxury family ski trip a real possibility. Either that – or you simply have more to spend on the slopes and gear to finesse your form. The pace of change of ski technology makes upgrading much more worthwhile. You’ll even find Christmas costs less than you think.
Postcard perfect
5. On form
An often underestimated reason to ski in December is quite simply the level of service that you’ll receive throughout your stay. Instructors are fresh, excited to be back on snow, unjaded by the challenge of chaperoning groups of kamikaze children. Meanwhile, chalet staff are exceptionally enthusiastic and eager to please and even shop attendants are friendly and welcoming. The shared anticipation of the whole season ahead is catching.
6. Postcard perfect
Lastly, there is little more beautiful than the first sight of snow-capped peaks, glistening at sunrise while snow laden chalets surrounded by fir trees stir and ski lifts creak into life. Twinkling lights a plenty, resorts like Val d’Isere do a fabulous job of making the early nights special with the village lit up in a thousand different colours, Christmas trees a plenty and stalls of hot chocolate to draw you in.
Amazing piste conditions
Yes, December is definitely one of my favourite times of year to ski. Hopefully you now have an inkling why…

4 of the best bars in Wellington

4 of the best bars in Wellington

Wellington is a lively city with an array of unique bars to suit absolutely everyone’s taste. Take a stroll down Courtney Place, explore side roads and alleys around the city and uncover hidden gems or simply follow this list to discover four of the best and most unique bars to be found in Wellington.
CGR Merchants & Co
People often wonder why it’s called CGR, it actually stands for Coffee, Gin and Rum, which they specialize in. When you enter you are captivated by the fascinating collection of infused liquors behind the bar. Some personal favorites like the Salted Caramel Rum and Mango & Chilli Gin are must tries. Their imaginative and unique infusions have earned them a place as one of the best bars in Wellington.

The Library
Once you walk through the book case door you’ll be astounded by the extensive book collection, relaxing lounge seating and of course the luxurious bathtub, often filled with champagne during private functions. Take a look at their unique cocktail list and indulge in one of their infamous desserts to sweeten up your night.

Matterhorn
This luxurious bar is tucked away in the off-beat & lively ‘Cuba Street’. Relax in the spacious outdoor courtyard or pop over to the indoor bar and indulge in one of their award winning cocktails. If you feel like segwaying into dinner, you’ve come to the right place; Matterhorn also happens to have many awards for its fine dining restaurant with unforgettably decadent meals.

Motel
Private, Luxurious and intriguing are the first words that come to mind when I think of The Motel. Much like a 1920’s speakeasy, the entrance is discretely tucked away in the quiet Forresters Lane alleyway off Tory Street; ring the bell to enter and the door will unlock. Motel constantly reinvents itself with a new theme accompanied by extravagant decor and cocktail menu. Most recently I walked into see a Tiki theme, I can’t wait to see what they think of next!

Ancestral
A chic Asian inspired Lounge bar with a lively vibe most likely fueled by a stellar wine and beer list. The moody indoor bar is a great contrast from the bright and airy courtyard. Feeling a bit peckish? Order some yummy tapas from their Yakitori grill or indulge in East Asian Cuisine with a twist.
